The Lake District is probably one of the dog friendliest places in the UK, and when it comes to walkies with our four-legged friends, the amazing choice of scenic routes is second to none.
There’s no shortage of websites offering suggestions for dog walking routes in the Lakes, but here are three stunning walks that caught my eye (they range from ten miles to just under two).
You can walk the ten mile scenic route around Derwentwater along flat and easy paths, which take you across the shores of the lake and through ancient woodlands. There are picnic places along the way to take in the stunning scenery or you could stop en-route at a cafe or restaurant. Download a map with points of particular interest here.
If you don’t want to walk that far, you could take a 4.3 mile stroll around Coniston Water. (You can half that distance if you hop on the Coniston Launch for the return leg!) Find out more here.
An even shorter walk can be made around Tarn Hows. Remember to take a camera too, as this is an absolutely stunning spot. The walk covers just 1.8 miles so might be more suitable for dogs who prefer a gentle pace. You can get the full details of the route here.
And don’t forget…
As well as an abundance of magnificent mountains and stunning scenery in the Lakes, we also have lots of sheep and cattle. As farm animals can be easily scared, make sure your dog doesn’t go anywhere near them. If you see a big herd it is advisable to keep your dog on a lead.
It goes without saying that our lovely landscape in the Lake District needs to be left as clean as you find it, so please dispose of all dog mess responsibly in bins.
Now that we’re enjoying some warmer weather in the summer months, it’s important to make sure your dog has access to water and isn’t suffering from heat stroke while out walking. Watch out if your dog seems to be panting excessively, or is having difficulty breathing. If your dog begins to show signs of heat stroke, firstly move them to the shade or near a breeze. Then cool them with water (particularly the head), and let them drink small amounts of water frequently. However, if you are still concerned, call a vet immediately.
